Campfire sites

Suomussalmi has several campfire sites located close to the centre of Suomussalmi. We have collected here the fireplaces that are located less than half an hour’s drive from the centre of Suomussalmi. There are also several other campfire sites in the rest of Suomussalmi, especially in Hossa. For a map of Hossa’s fireplaces, see for example the luontoon.fi website.

Jätkänpuisto 

The campfire site of Jätkänpuisto is located along the 5 road, just outside the municipal centre.

Walking distance from the parking lot is about 100 m.

Seitenahveninen

The Seitenahveninen trail is about 2.5 km long. It circles the Seitenahveninen pond and along the trail there are two pavilions and a fireplace. The trail continues to the Kaunisnieme lake, which offers good views of the surrounding Hietajärvi. In Kaunisniemi there is the Soiva Metsä (Musical Forest), where you can play large instruments.

The total length of the trails is 6.3 km.

Driving directions: from Suomussalmi centre, take road 5 south for about 3 km and turn right onto Lomakylänantie. Drive about 2 km and turn right at the Seitenahveninen junction. Drive 1.5 km and you will reach the Seitenahveninen parking lot.

Säynäjäsuo

The Säynäjäsuo hiking trail is about 8 km long. The trail runs through the Säynäjäsuo marshland conservation area and through the kangaroo woods. The wetlands are crossed by longitudinal poles. The trail is marked with red landmarks. Outside the reserve, on the shore of Syväjärvi lake, there is a hut and a fireplace.

Directions. Take the 5 road south for about 5 km and turn left onto Moisiovaara road. Drive about 8 km and on the right side of the road is the Säynäjäsuo parking lot.

Varisjärvi

Varisjärvi has several fireplaces. Most of them are located right along the sand road and are easily accessible.

Driving directions: take Kyröntiet for 6 km towards Puolanga and turn right into Varisjärventie.

Continue on the sand road for about 2 km.

Varisköngäs

Varisköngäs is an 11 m high waterfall located 9 km from the centre of Suomussalmi. The waterfall is easily accessible by car, with a 300 m walk from the car park to the waterfall. The path is easy to follow, with steep steps near the waterfall.

Driving directions: take Kyröntiet 6,5 km towards Puolanga and turn left into Aittokoskentie. Drive about 1,5 km and on your right you will see a sign for Varisköngäs and a parking lot.
