Julma Ölkky winter trail
In winter, you can walk along the lake ice on Julma-Ölkky. There are many things to see on the way – the rock paintings of Julma-Ölkky, the Pirunkirkko cave and the magnificent icefall. In winter, you can experience Rotkojärvi in a completely different way compared to the hiking route around the rocks in summer.
The route is accessible from January to the end of April on skis (no slopes), snowshoes, fatbikes, and on foot. However, it should be noted that as spring progresses (in April) the surface of the route starts to soften and that’s when it’s best to move either on skis or snowshoes. There can also be ice on the water from time to time, so you should wear waterproof footwear on the route. In the wilderness section of Julma-Ölkky, there are reflective signs at the intersections, while the winter trail section of Värikallio also has orange paint markers.
