Arriving to Suomussalmi
While a car offers the most flexibility for exploring Suomussalmi, visitors can also rely on public transportation with some advance planning. During the summer months, a regular bus service connects you to the stunning Hossa National Park. For those arriving by air, choose between Kajaani and Kuusamo airports, both serving as convenient gateways to our region.

Taking a train?
The nearest train stations to Suomussalmi are in Kontiomäki and Kajaani, with multiple daily departures towards both southern and northern Finland. The journey from Helsinki to Kajaani takes around 6–7 hours. Some arriving trains offer convenient bus connections to Suomussalmi and Hossa National Park.

You can reach Suomussalmi via direct bus connections from Kajaani, Kuusamo, and Oulu. Pohjolan Matka offers regular service to Kajaani and Kuusamo, while Saaga Travel operates the Suomussalmi–Oulu route on Mondays and Fridays. Suomussalmi is easily accessible via major routes, including National Road 5/E63 and the scenic route Via Karelia.
