Arriving to Suomussalmi

While a car offers the most flexibility for exploring Suomussalmi, visitors can also rely on public transportation with some advance planning. During the summer months, a regular bus service connects you to the stunning Hossa National Park. For those arriving by air, choose between Kajaani and Kuusamo airports, both serving as convenient gateways to our region.

Railways

Suomussalmi and Hossa are easy to reach by train year-round. The nearest railway stations are in Kajaani and Oulu, with regular train connections from various parts of Finland.

Coach connections to Suomussalmi

Suomussalmi can be reached by direct bus services from Kajaani, Kuusamo, and Oulu. Services to and from Kajaani and Kuusamo are operated by Pohjolan Matka, while the Oulu route is operated by Wiimax Oy.

Flights

You can travel to Suomussalmi and Hossa conveniently via several airports. The closest airports are located in Kuusamo and Kajaani, from which the destinations in Suomussalmi can be reached by car in approximately 1–2.5 hours. Oulu Airport also offers excellent connections, and the journey from there to Suomussalmi and Hossa takes around three hours.

Road Connections

Suomussalmi is easy to reach by car via Highway 5 (E63) and the Via Karelia tourist route. Excellent road connections make travelling smooth from the south, north, and east alike.
