Connections to Suomussalmi
The most convenient way to get around Suomussalmi is by car, but with a bit more planning you can also travel around Suomussalmi on public transport. In the summer season, you can get to Hossa National Park by bus. The nearest airports to Suomussalmi are in Kajaani and in Kuusamo.
To Suomussalmi by bus
Suomussalmi can be reached by direct bus connections from Kajaani, Kuusamo and Oulu. There are services to Kajaani and Kuusamo by Pohjolan Matka. Detailed timetables and tickets can be found at matkahuolto.fi.

To Kajaani by train
The nearest train stations to Suomussalmi are in Kontiomäki and in Kajaani, from which there are several daily departures both to the South and to the North.
Some of the arriving trains have a bus connection to Suomussalmi and Hossa National Park.

To Suomussalmi by car
The main tourist routes passing through Suomussalmi are National Road 5/E63 and the Tourist Route Via Karelia.
